He was no longer ignored by the royals who he had protected his entire lives. The two were happy with their little secret that was until the dark mages attacked. At the present they were known as witches, twisted elves who feed off the magic of the souls of the dead, preventing them from rest. That was a fatal sin in the elven realm, for the dead was to remain until time came for their souls to go home. The witches of that time were cruel, they would warp the souls of loved ones to haunt families and friends. They had set their sights on the royal place. The fall of the great stronghold signalled the beginning of the Great War.

I said, "for a witch to be the Luna?" Raven went silent. I turned to look at her. Her face was pale, her hands were shaking. "A witch," she said slowly, "has not been Luna of a wolf pack since the Great Betrayal. Since Salem. Since the wolves turned their backs." "What's the official name?" "The official name for a mixed-blood marriage between a wolf and a witch is a Concord of Ashes." Raven's voice was barely a whisper. "They were banned after Salem. Anyone who enters into one is exiled. Their children are killed."

Emily sighed in relief, she had expected him to be skeptical and laugh about it but he didn't. Her case was one of the rarest cases of witchcraft. Though witches had the ability to manipulate and control energy, power, nature, etc they had to draw that ability from somewhere. Most witches drew it from one of the four elements; Water, Air, Fire, and Earth. Some from nature which was partly Earth. Then black magic used sacrifices and blood to generate power. Wizards were said to be connected with the 5th element which was the Spirit and Sorcerers which were the highest witches could draw energy from all of them.

Eric began, drawing my attention to him with renewed interest. “I am not going into a history lesson, but the Goddess we pray to is Selene, while for the witches their Goddess is Hecate. Some believe they are one and the same, while others believe otherwise. Honestly, with history, we never really know how much of it we can be sure of. Things have probably been twisted throughout the years.” Eric glanced over at me, but I just kept listening. “Anyway, I think it had to do with Hecate’s relations with Selene is why it is like that for us.” Eric finished.

Looking up into my eyes, I could see tears near its edges. “After the Moon Goddess left, we all tried to get the answer as to why your eyes were red, yet Brian’s was Hazel. It took months of getting witches, warlocks, and anybody we could get to tell us the reason. While looking for answers, Hecate came to us.” She is the Three-Faced Greek Goddess of Witchcraft. “She explained that while your father was a werewolf, he was also a hybrid.”

My heart began to pound faster as I stared at Mama wide eyed. “You might have heard rumors of what Emeres are? They are spirit children, immortals that chose to be born as children into mortal families again and again. But that is not where I am going.” Mama sat up straight on the couch, pushing the bottom fold of her wrapper between her thighs. “What do you know of witches?” “Wi- witches?” I stuttered. “Nothing.” Mama smiled. “But you called them that day and they came to you.”

I stare at myself in the mirror and remind myself that I need to be better, stronger, faster. “You know how far away Summer Hill is?” Aunt Jo asks me as she ties the laces on her sneakers. “I do.” It’s going to take us hours to get there. But I needed to run. I need to think about what I want to say to him. Which is why I ask what deity witches pray to. “Hecate. Ora. Witches pray to the goddess Hecate. Wolves pray to the goddess Selene. It is said that Hecate and Selene are friends.” The thought of that comforted me. My aunts may be together in the afterlife if their goddesses are friendly.

A new determination settles in my chest and I shut off the water and get out to dry off and get ready to go to my office and make some calls. We weren't born from the Moon Goddess and we don’t worship her. We worship the elements Earth, Wind, Fire and Water. Destiny works in strange ways, the witches and the wolves have been enemies for a long time, neither cross each other's boundaries and it is highly forbidden to ever mate with each other. Over the years, witches have been mated to wolves, but once the council finds out, they cast a spell to sever the bond immediately. The spell works, but the victim's life changes completely and he or she becomes an outcast, the spell also weakens his or her original powers causing such a person to become weak.

Channelling spells weren't easy to come by, in fact my mother used to tell me that no living witch in other parts of the world could perform that. My mother had taught me time and time again that witchcraft mostly revolved around four elements. Water, fire, air and soil. Looking at the image, the candle represented fire, the tin of water was pretty direct. The pots of plant represented soil, from which they grew with the bird clearly standing in for air. What I didn't understand was the ring of fire, what did it represent? A slight headache was beginning to form, my mind overworking to try and break the hidden meaning. Where was the written spell to go along with the depiction?
