Lilly 4 more days later I could hear people talking. I couldn’t make out the words but I could hear voices. I wanted to ask them to be quiet. I was really tired and just wanted to sleep. I tried to open my eyes to see them but I couldn’t do it. I tried lifting my hand but it felt so heavy I gave up. The voices were getting louder like someone was yelling. Someone sounded very mad. What was happening? Who was talking? I feel like I should know the angry voice but I could place it. Maybe a little more rest and I would be able to figure it out. Yea, I just needed some more rest.

“What should we do first? Maybe explore the backyard? Or we could find a game?” Esme was silent for a long moment, her little brow furrowed in thought. Her bags felt heavy in her hands, a physical reminder of the new life she was trying to step into. Just as she was about to suggest something else, Esme looked up. “You can read to me.” Relief washed over Ellie. She smiled. “I would love to. What book do you want? What’s your favorite book?”

I notice the new missing tooth that she has, but before I can talk about it, she says, “I’m good. I was with Uncle Jamie doing patrol.”

“Adorable. That’s all they are. You wait, they’ll grow up and start talking back to you.” “And stealing my toys,” Max added solemnly, as though it was a grave, unavoidable fate. Lena rolled her eyes, smiling, as she settled into the chair beside Ellie. “You look good, Ellie. Really, you’re glowing. The teeny violet gem on the book glowed too. She reached out for the book and took it. "You should know a book like this wouldn't be that easy to touch," her eyes were still closed. "You could have warned me," I whined, massaging my popping veins. "You could have used your head," she countered. The book opened easily for her.

A second later, her entire face changed. “It’s a book!” Eleanor smiled a little. “It is.” Sophie pulled it out immediately, already turning the cover toward herself. It was a children’s book about a little girl who liked building things—bridges, toy houses, tiny inventions made from scraps. Honestly, it was exactly the kind of thing Sophie loved. “She builds stuff?” Sophie asked. “She does,” Eleanor answered. “Very clever stuff.” Sophie flipped through two pages before looking up. “I like it.” “I hoped you would.”

Ellie had looked at the situation, at the threat Vittorio posed to me specifically, and decided she was an acceptable sacrifice. "I didn't ask her to do that," I said, my throat tight. "None of us did." Noir moved toward the cottage, his boots crunching in the snow. "She did it anyway." Inside, the cottage felt wrong. Too quiet. Too empty. Ellie's book was still on the couch where she'd left it yesterday. Her coffee mug sat in the sink, the handle facing left the way she always positioned it. Small pieces of her scattered around a space she'd never return to.
