“ The Alexis Williams? Or…” I held out a hand at her. “ CEO Williams corporation” I added. “ I’m Samantha, and I'm Nortia's sister, the only one she has in this world” she beamed excitedly. I withdrew my hand, making sure she knew how it felt before she withdrew back into her shell. “ I guess you aren't a fan of handshakes then” I scoffed, I could see what she was doing, and she had lied. I had overheard her talking down on Nortia and anyone who talked down on my wife didn't deserve me speaking to them.

Eric suddenly announced, surprising Derek, who was standing beside him. “I promise”. Xavier didn't hesitate and made the promise. After hearing Xavier's promise, a satisfied smile appeared on Eric's lips. He led Xavier to Vanessa's desk-seat, and also allowed him to sit on it. Afterward, he announced, “Xavier, the first secret you need to know is this. Nicholas is the only guy my big sister has ever dated”. After listening to what Eric had said, Xavier's eyes widened in surprise. Derek left the spot he was standing at, and approached Eric and Xavier, since he wanted to contribute some words. “My big sister also appreciates those who understand her strong personality”. I blinked. "Had?" Eric's eyes returned to the fire. "Her name was Elise," He whispered. "She was… six." The weight of his words crushed the air between us.

Carter down the hall, I hurried toward him. "Dr. Carter, how’s Nicholas doing today?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. He looked up from his clipboard, his expression unreadable. "There's no change, I'm afraid," he said, and then added with a hint of optimism, "But it's possible that having your sister close by might help him wake up. Hopefully, she'll come soon." I forced a smile. "I’m sure she will be here soon," I said. Lena's absence was an unsettling puzzle I'd need to solve.
