She smiled back, waving her hand as I left the hall. I walked over to the supply closet, gathered the cleaning tools and fresh linens I needed, and headed straight up to the master's wing. I pushed open the first heavy door, entering the space that belonged to Valerius. A familiar chill ran down my spine. As usual, the room was dimly lit. Since they were supposed to be thousands of miles away in Russia, I had planned to escape through the back door tonight. Once the rooms were flawlessly presentable, I slipped out of their suffocating rooms and made my way down to the gardens to meet Leo. The crisp evening air felt like a lifeline.

By the time they realized I was gone, I’d be halfway out of Città dei Re, probably flipping them off from a speeding car. The opportunity stared right back at me, spreading its hands and waiting for me to walk right in. Perhaps, this could be an answered prayer. God was finally giving me the chance to leave this trap of a marriage. If I made it out of the tunnel in time, I could abandon his car somewhere on the road and hail a taxi. Or I could call Valerie immediately after I abandoned his car. Either way, if I wanted to escape, this seemed like the best and only time. I rushed to climb into the driver’s seat, steadying my hands on the wheel. When I turned the ignition and the vehicle roared to life, my heart leaped into my throat at the thought of finally escaping Ace Reynolds.
