I guessed trying to tear my straw open. Two hundred medical masks with good quality, a new set of frames for the prescription lenses, different shapes from my usual ones. Colored contacts, green, which would shift my hazel eyes. Glass eyes do not react. But as the artificial glare of my phone hit their faces, I saw it—a synchronized, oily motion. All their pupils retracted. The black centers of those fixed glass eyes, which should have been nothing more than painted beads or static crystal, shriveled into pinpricks, reacting to the light exactly like a human eye.

Not breaking their stares, my lips searched for the bright red straw that hung close to the rim of the glass. My lips finally found the ever fleeting straw, I sucked down the rest of my hard lemonade. The harsh sounds of the glass emptying caught my attention instead. Smacking my lips together, I turned away from the stares only to glance at the pitcher of lemonade. I shrugged my shoulders.
