After a whole week in complete darkness, Brandon needed a conscious effort to keep from closing his eyes. On one hand, what he called the patchwork of smudges and flashes was almost as disorienting as not seeing at all. And he would confess only once, and only to me, that he was terrified of unwillingly straining his eyes. However, when he was able to keep them open longer, and colors started to appear slowly, he finally believed the doctor’s recommendations and put his fear to rest.
