I see Erik and Chris close to the bed, Lilly is off to the side, Zander behind her with his arms wrapped around her waist, Elder Rose sat in a chair near the bed and in the far corner in the room stood Oliver head down in the shadows. I enlarged the paused frame on the screen, slow, deliberate, and pointed, circling around him. “There,” I said, my finger steady. “That man.” They followed my gesture. The image was grainy, taken from the corner of the lounge corridor, but the face was clear enough to burn itself into my memory. The sharp jaw. The familiar eyes and the way his every being rested on just one leg.

The pings, the jabs, the dirt. I didn’t cry. I didn’t feel shocked either. I just sighed, tossed the phone back on the bed, and pulled my blanket to my chest. Somewhere deep inside, I knew what was coming. But for tonight, the glow of my room felt heavier than usual. And I let the silence hold me.

He smiled, blood on his teeth, and shoved Damien harder against the glass. The panel gave way with a deafening crash. Shards exploded outward as Victor lost his balance. For one terrible moment, he hung on the edge, his fingers clawing at the broken frame. Damien tried to grab him, but it was too late. Victor’s failing body betrayed him completely. He slipped through the jagged opening and plunged multiple stories down into the atrium below.

I mutter. The mirror pulses a violent red. The heating elements are failing, the glass spider-webbing under the thermal stress. C-O-M-P-R-O-M-I-S-E-D. One final sentence scrolls across the bottom before the glass shatters into a thousand glittery shards. O-N-E G-U-A-R-D I-S N-O-T H-I-S. I drop to a crouch as the glass rains down. I don't feel the shallow cuts on my shoulders. I'm staring at the empty frame.

"Adrian and I are stronger than you think. We've faced adversity before, and we've come out on top. We won't let you destroy us." Vincent's eyes narrowed, his grip on a folder tightening. "We'll see about that," he sneered. "But mark my words, Ava, your perfect little life is about to come crashing down. Adrian's secrets will be exposed, and there's nothing you can do to stop it." With those ominous words hanging in the air, Vincent turned on his heels and disappeared into the depths of the city, leaving me standing there, shaken but determined.
