Ang nobelang ito ay pagbalik-tanaw sa taong 1884 kung saan ang Pilipinas ay nasa pamumuno pa ng kahariang Espanya. Ang kuwentong ito ay tungkol sa isang Italyano-Pilipinong mestisa na gustong ibaon sa limot ang pagiging isang bampira at ninais mamuhay ulit ng karaniwan bilang isang tao. Nakilala din ni Carmela ang isang Kastila-Pilipinong mestiso na si Eduardo Ramirez na siyang naging kanyang irog at pinakatatanging minamahal. Ngunit sa buong akala ni Carmela ay nalalasap na niya ang inaasam-asam na pamumuhay bilang tao ulit dahil sa nararanasang init ng pagtanggap ng isang pamilya at sa masaya't puno ng pagmamahal na pag-ibig , siya ay madadala sa isang malagim at nakatagong lihim ng Santa Lucia, ang mga sekreto ng mga sumpa at dugo na itinago ng maraming nagdaang taon.
