“Ah shit, no,” he said, dread sinking into his guts. He stared at her. “Who did this? Do you know who he is?”
“No,” said Katie, shaking rancid droplets from her fingers. “But they did.”
Palm Clemency staggered a bit, unsteady on his feet. “Shit . . . ” he murmured in that grim voice. He leaned against the tree in his dark blue Chief of Police jacket, shaken to his soul, looking as if the world as he knew it had come to an end. “Merciful God, it’s true. We’re cursed. All fucking cursed.”
