Chapter 31 - Everlasting Fire The hours of the night ticked by slowly. I couldn’t get his words out of my head. ‘I feel nothing for you. You were just a piece to a game I am no longer interested in playing.’ Lies, that’s what his eyes told me. All he was speaking were lies, trying to push me away. I stared up at the night sky until the black of night mixed with the oranges of the morning sun.

Ruby read and was belwirded by each and every word, and she turned the pages, reading and processing every single word. After the Flames extinction, a prophecy was predicted that when the time is right. A Flame will rise from the ashes, A Hybrid, a flame and werewolf, born from a human bloodline. A Queen to both Witches and Werewolves. The Last Flame in existence shall rise and be reunited with her Ignis for they shall lead the wolves and the witches. Like a true King and Queen. She stopped reading and looked at the ceiling in amazement, "I am a freaking Queen?"

I stare as Vesuvius keeps throwing up ash into the air, and the deadly ash has started to fall back down to the earth. It is a wondrous sight to behold, nature in all her violence and beauty fused into one. Lighting has started to streak from the enormous cloud, and I was transfixed by the designs against the now darkening sky. No sun now. Only darkness. Like a tomb. It dawns on me. I was not meant to survive Pompeii. "Fuck you, fairies!" I scream into the air.

Believed she might destroy Aiden, Rowan—everyone. But then—Aiden’s hand squeezed hers, grounding her in the storm. The flames within her no longer felt like chains. They felt like wings. Evelynn raised her hands, and the fire answered. His sparks of light appeared to him like orphan fireflies above the infinite darkness of the water. On the third day, they crossed a latitude and the next thing they knew, dawn was breaking on the horizon. They squinted at the dazzling light, bleary-eyed. Temujin and Aki finally had an inkling how their ancestors must’ve felt coming out of the Age of Darkness, upon the parting of the curtain of dust clouds brought about by the Fire from Heaven meteor. It was like being witness to the breaking of a curse.

Next, the wings of the book were burning, but it didn't stop as it tried to still get away. “If only I hadn't given up my fire powers—it’s going to get away; she will get away!” Ruby yelled, and it was true as the book kept trying, then Blake and Dante finally got to her, and holding their hands, they opened their mouths, and fire came out of them, shooting straight to the book. I could hear the screams of my mother and other creatures; my head was spinning, and I couldn't take it anymore. I was about to fall to the ground, but someone held me back. I looked up and was shocked to see my wife smiling at me.

She read: “When all is ash, You are still altar. When the house falls, Your Spirit finds shelter. When they scatter us, You gather fire from the wind.” James exhaled. No applause. No spotlight. Just peace. The kind that doesn’t come from victory. The kind that only comes from surrender.
