Bullets impacted the shield and melted as they hit, falling to the ground in puddles of metal. Alex's ears trembled with the piercing sound. Jack reached to cover them. His own felt like they were going to explode. The bullets kept coming, but the white fire held them at bay. He pressed her head into his shoulder. He reached up, melting the cuffs holding her in place. She sagged against him.
