Folding Pages In A Book Novels & Stories

Satisfied, I was about to close it when something caught my attention. The page numbers. I frowned. Page forty-three... Followed by... Forty-six. I turned back. Then forward again. Forty-three. Forty-six. The pages hadn't fallen out. They had been cut out. Cleanly. Almost professionally. I ran my fingertips lightly along the inner binding. There was no mistaking it. Several sheets had once been there. Now... They weren't. I sat back slowly. Perhaps... It had simply been damaged. Books this old were bound to lose pages eventually.

My conscience doesn't want to add fuel to the fire. Aiden shook his head, pointing to a few pages near the middle of the book. "No, I'm not talking about those pages. Look, three pages are missing right here." We all leaned in to take a closer look, and sure enough, Aiden was right. Three pages in the middle of the book were conspicuously blank as if they had been torn out. "What could that mean?" I said, my mind racing. "Did someone try to hide something in those pages?"

Set it on the table and opened to the section where pages had been torn out. Four pages. Gone. Removed with surgical precision. I ran my fingers along the ragged edges still clinging to the binding. The paper was not yellowed like the rest of the book. Not aged. The tears were clean. Recent. Very recent. I pulled the lamp closer. Examined the binding. There. At the base of the torn section. A fragment. So small I had missed it the first time. A corner of a page that had not completely pulled free. I used my fingernail to carefully extract it. The fragment was maybe an inch square. Most of it blank. But in the corner. A few words visible in that same ancient script.

Just before she closes the book, a piece of folded paper suddenly fell from the pages and landed on the floor. “What is this?” she whispered to herself then squatted on the floor as she opened the paper. Written on it were scribbles of lines that seemed a little disturbing, a few of them reached up to the corner while the other lines just circled their way back around. As if someone had written it out of spite since some lines were thicker than the others.

Fucking my fist, it is. *** “And how would you turn this paper into 3D?” I asked, holding the hard paper with a thick gsm. Some students were leaning on the desk with a frown on their faces and the others were going through their notes as if an answer would appear to them magically. “By folding it?” Mia asked, raising her hand. “Almost correct answer.” I went back to my desk and taught them how to hold a cutter. A forty-five-degree angle, where to grip it and how to move it on the paper instead of pressing it.

Turn back. Then the understanding. The fortnight was not there. Not scribbled over. Not inked out. Not torn, either, in the way a hurried person tears, leaving a ragged shoulder of paper standing proud of the spine. Cut. Somebody had taken a blade to that book and removed the pages one at a time, close in against the binding, and had done it well enough that the book still closed flat. You had to open it wide and hold it toward the window to see the stubs at all.

"Here you go, My Queen." Mirra walked in to the chambers with the large book in her hands. "It took me a minute but I managed to get all the dust out. Misha showed me an excellent way to rid the dust from the book. All I needed was two willing friends to hold the cover of the book at either side and let the pages hang upside down. Many delicate swatting later, the book is as clean as it can be." I watched as Mirra walked over to the dining table and placed the large book in front of me.
