I feel pity for the big guy. Right now, Roman and I are in a stand-off against his cousins Menandro and Lara in a game called Sapo. It meant Choke the Frog, but without an actual frog. A figurine frog sat on top of an erected log in the middle of the garden. Each team has ten gold coins and all we have to do is aim for the frog’s mouth, choke the figurine. It was easier said than done. Each team hasn’t been able to choke the freaking open-mouthed frog yet. We only have four coins left for each team. Menandro missed another shoot. Lara’s aim was no good as well.

Subordinates, editors, and a few golfing companions of various ages in suit jackets and polo shirts flocked under the shade of the veranda. The table was ready. Mrs. Cameron had already laid out plastic utensils, folded tissue papers, and cups over the arranged paper plates. Water bottles, beer cans, and orange juice lay soaked, cold, in the coolers. Chopped, marinated, and skewered meat lay cooked while the mash and greens rested on the table with the truffles Kitty picked up yesterday. All they had to do was eat.

I stared at my half-finished plate, at the soft steam curling off it, and felt something cold coil in my stomach. My appetite vanished instantly. It was like the word Game itself flipped a switch inside me. My fork clattered against the tray, the noise too loud in my ears.

We were cooking and the second we covered the lid, the food got burnt. “Fire! Fire!” Lesley’s voice came, rushing outside while holding the unconscious form of Erica. “Shut up!
