My mind immediately flashed to the way Simon, Jack, and Beth had looked earlier, how they had been out of breath, and the fear in their eyes.
I looked down at my hands, trying to distract myself, but the smell didn’t go away. It almost seemed to linger in the air around me, a sour, musty odor that seemed to be coming from them—not just one, but all of them. It was as if it had seeped into their clothes, into their skin. The more I tried to ignore it, the worse it became.
I squeezed my eyes shut, shaking my head. It was ridiculous. They had been running, maybe they had just gotten sweaty or stumbled through something gross in the woods. The scent had to be from that.
