Opening the doors of the library she met Janeka and Freya, they glanced at her. “Where did you get that book from?” Freya asked, her gaze meeting the unfamiliar book she was holding in her hands. The book had a thick black leather cover with a golden seal on its top. Earnestine tightened her grip on it when she noticed footsteps approaching. She turned and met Sabrina walking in. “The car is good as new.” She told them, but soon she noticed the awkward look on their faces, walking closer to Janeka, Sabrina glared at Earnestine urging her to speak up.

Cain flips open the green book in his hand and Safira opens the one in hers. They stare at me and I smile sheepishly before walking over to one of the shelves and picking up the first green book I see. I smirk as I walk back to my seat. “What are the odds that I picked the book the librarian was telling us about?” Cain chuckles. “There are over one hundred green leather-bound books in here, different shades and different sizes, so let’s say the chances are pretty slim. The book is probably thicker than that.” Safira nods. “A history of Lycan and werewolf magics sounds like something that lives in a thick tome. Probably weighs a few pounds.”

Kaida, mouth agape, stared at the leather-bound journals Brady had placed on the table in the library. Wearing white gloves, he'd retrieved them from a high glass-encased shelf and had lined them in order. Fifty-two in all. Some bindings were cracked, the pages yellow with age. Others looked new and barely touched.

“That is really thoughtful of you, Luna, and I would be happy to help. You can make yourself comfortable, and I will fetch the books. Any particular preference?” Ariel looked around the library; the walls and aisle were lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, and there were soft velvet sofas arranged in the corner for reading. “Not really, just books about 7–10 years ago about pack history. Bring as many as you can find; the more, the merrier, right?” Ariel gave him a sweet smile that she knew people could barely resist and that the man was practically melting beside her. “Of course, Luna, anything for you.” Aaron went deeper into the heart of the library, and Ariel took to looking around.

In the far corner is a sink and a crude-looking toilet. Hooks line one of the walls, all empty. The air smells like rust and dust. But then, something catches my eye. A shelf near the back, almost hidden in shadow. Not plastic packages this time. Books. Old ones. Their spines are worn, leather cracked. Some have gold filigree. Others are thick and bound in cloth. I move closer, squinting to read the faded titles. “Lineage of Power.” “The Lost Coronation.” “Treaties of the First Blood.”

“That’s exactly what your grandmother used to say at your age.” I wandered farther between the narrow shelves mostly to escape the public humiliation, while Harmony disappeared toward the romance section making loud, dramatic noises about enemies-to-lovers tropes. The bookstore glowed softly beneath the low hanging lights while the snow drifted in thick waves outside the front windows facing Main Street. I paused near the folklore section automatically, my fingers tracing the bindings. Appalachian legends, mountain myths, and local history books lined the dark wood. One specific title caught my eye immediately: The Founding Families of Black Hollow.

When I asked the butler, he said there were more than a thousand books in a two-story facility. My hand shuffled the books on one shelf at the left corner of the room and only stopped with a purple light glimmered to a part that evoked my eyes. Since they placed it on the 1st tier of the 10 feet bookshelf, a ladder for someone like me was a must. I grinned when the purple leather book with a gold gilded frame on its sides landed on my hands. They decorated the center with the Daria Empire’s Griffin logo carved from amber, plus the golden clasp added to its vintage aesthetic.

Raven stepped into the library, looking at the mounds and mounds and stacks and shelves of books all around her. She could not remember one time ever seeing a library as boundless as this one. She walked alongside the stacks and started reading the types of books that were included in this library. She found there were books of all the creatures in the land. There were books about caster magic, human magic, the magic animals, the bitten, the history of the bitten and many many many other books. She took an interest in a thick, black, leather book, pulling it off of the shelf she noticed the dust being disturbed as the large book slid off of its place and her hands. The grand library smelled faintly of cedar and old ink. Rows of towering shelves stretched into the shadows, each crammed with leather-bound volumes whose gold-stamped titles caught the flicker of the firelight. A storm rolled low outside, pressing gray light against the tall arched windows. In the center of the room, the fire snapped sharply, as if it, too, could sense the confrontation to come.

The shifting thud of something heavy being pulled from where it had long been kept. When the librarian came back, she was carrying a book. No. Not a book in the ordinary sense. Something older. Larger. Thick enough that both her hands supported it carefully from beneath. Dust clung to the edges. The cover was dark leather, cracked by time, with faint markings pressed into it so deeply they had outlived colour. It looked heavy in more than one way. Preserved. Hidden. Waiting.
