Several shirtless men were carrying boxes of goods from the boat up to the mansion. Those men all immediately set down their crates of goods and stood politely while we disembarked onto the dock. Some of them cast their eyes downward, but others nodded politely. Joemar paused in front of one of the men, who had a round belly and thin gray hair. Joemar spoke to him in Spanish, and the man laughed and gave him a fist-bump. Okay, so he gets along with all the servants. That doesn’t mean he’s a good guy.

It pulled up smoothly, and a broad-shouldered man jumped out, securing the boat to the dock as Phin motioned for us to walk up with him. He wore no shirt, his skin tanned and streaked with mud. A blonde woman followed, stepping off the boat as she muttered to herself. Mud coated her entirely, head to toe. The boat we were booked on was easy to spot, it was the largest one there, and it had none of the rough, weathered look of the fishing vessels surrounding it. It was a wooden sailboat straight out of a seafaring story, smaller than the grand hulls you saw in films, but beautiful in its own right. Up on deck stood a man in a crisp white naval-style uniform, sporting an enormous, thick mustache. He was a large, imposing figure, but the moment he spotted us coming up the walkway, his face broke into a broad, welcoming smile and he made his way down to greet us.

There were three higher floors and three lower floors. On top of the deck, there was even a freshwater swimming pool which was much more luxurious than the cruise ship that Jasmine’s grandfather, Lord Moore, had given to Charlie. After Charlie and Jasmine got on the ship, they went directly to the top deck, stood in front of the guardrails on the deck, and waved to Yahiko and Nanako who were on the dock below as they shouted, “It’s very late now, the sea breeze is getting chilly!
