"We are going back for it after we hit the fruit stands. No arguments."
"Okay," I say, a small, genuine laugh finally escaping my lips. "No arguments. You're the boss today."
"Damn right I am," Liz says, taking a loud sip of her smoothie.
We turn a corner, walking past a massive display of artisanal cheeses toward a small, cobblestone courtyard filled with outdoor cafe tables. The area is slightly less crowded, shaded by thick green ivy that climbs up the brick walls of the surrounding buildings.
My eyes automatically scan the courtyard, a lingering reflex of my old routine.
