I took the stairs to the third floor, my footsteps echoing loudly. My car sat where I’d left it. A black Mercedes. Expensive. Shiny. Another gift I never asked for. The floor was almost empty now. Too quiet. As I walked toward the car, digging through my purse for my keys, a strange chill crawled up my spine. It was sudden. Sharp. Like someone had poured ice down my back. That’s when I saw it. The security camera above the garage entrance was dark. No blinking red light. No quiet hum. Just dead.

I knew she was trying to reassure herself more than me, but that did not remove the telltale tremors in her voice. It didn't help that the lights suddenly went off, plunging us into inky darkness. Fear clawed at my throat, but I willed it away and kept moving, making sure to call out to Grace every other second so as not to her. We made our way like two blind mice. A beam of light cut through the darkness and bounced weakly around, landing on the only lone car in the garage -- mine. Silently thanking Grace for the light from her phone, I made my way to it and fumbled with the key.

I hope she did a better job with her youngest son. I took a second to indulge in a deep, reassuring breath and then pushed the garage door button. I whack the car in reverse, holding down the break as the door raises way too slowly for my liking. As soon as I judge the door is high enough for the car to scoot under, I plant my foot, and with the wheels literally squealing and smoking, I back out of the garage. A few warriors, probably tracking my scent, instantly flank the car upon hearing the engine roar. Ignoring their shouts, I thunder backwards until I'm able to spin towards the exit and plant my foot down.

“It’s okay.” I try to keep my voice even because I can feel the tremble in her arms and back. “I’m sorry, I…” She tries to push against my chest, but I keep my arms firm. “No need to be sorry. Are you having trouble with your door?” I nod over to it and the key in her hand. There’s emergency lighting in the hall, but it’s minimal. “The stupid thing won’t scan.” “Why don’t you come in here until the generators kick on?”

Another sound followed…a low grinding noise beneath the hood. “What the hell…” I muttered, glancing at the dashboard. The temperature gauge flickered, then the engine light blinked red. “No, no, no. Not now.” The sound grew louder. I pressed lightly on the gas, but the car jerked instead of moving smoothly. “Come on,” I hissed, hitting the steering wheel. “Not now. Please.” The road around me was completely deserted… no lights, no houses, no sign of life. Just the sound of the wind slipping through the trees and the car’s dying hum.

It's almost like pulling the day's weight over your head. I jump on my bed and flip the switch on the night lamp beside me,turning it off. "Good night Troy." I mumble to myself. * I wake up to the sound of deafening sirens blaring out of the security alarm systems. I snap my eyes open and pull the covers away from my body. The security bulb in my room is blinking a red light,corresponding with the sounds disturbing the entire building. It's going to be blinking that same way in every other room as well.

"We don't have time. Russo’s primary team is disabled, but the estate's backup squad is already on this floor. Listen." Through the narrow gap in the elevator doors above, I could hear the faint, rhythmic squeak of rubber soles on polished concrete. It was the distinct sound of security guards patrolling the private garage. They were moving in pairs, their footsteps slow and calculated. They knew we were down here. They were just waiting for us to show our faces. I pulled my tablet out, keeping the screen dimmed as low as possible to avoid throwing any light up through the gap. The data line was still showing a red, blinking error. Signal blocked. Searching for satellite uplink...

He scanned the corners of the ceiling, the doors, the staircase, the windows. Ryan’s tone remained flat. “Your perimeter lighting is insufficient between the garden walls. North gate sensors are delayed by 2.3 seconds. Also, I noticed while coming in that there’s a blind spot in the camera at the west side of the garage.” Sylvie blinked. Her father blinked too. Ryan hadn’t even walked ten full steps inside. "How..." Cole began. "You hired me." Ryan replied simply. "This is what I do." Sylvie muttered under her breath, "Well, hello to you too."

The lights flickered without warning. Not fully, just a brief, stuttering pulse along one stretch of corridor, emergency fixtures blinking weakly to life before dying again just as quickly. Somewhere nearby, a ventilation system groaned awake for a few seconds, stale air shifting through vents that hadn't moved in decades, before falling silent once more. An elevator panel, mounted beside a set of heavy steel doors, briefly lit a single amber indicator. Then darkness again. "How is any of this still working?" Alexander asked, staring at the dead elevator panel.

"Are you going up?" "No. I installed a remote switch. Efficiency." He pulled a small remote from his pocket. It looked like a garage door opener. "Ready?" Cale asked. "Ready." Cale pressed the button. Click. Above them, in the glass lantern room, a light flared. It started dim, a warm yellow glow. Then it brightened. It turned white. Brilliant. Blinding. The motor whirred. The lens began to rotate. A beam of light cut through the twilight. It swept out over the ocean, hitting the waves, illuminating the whitecaps.
