Chapter 9 — Ghosts in the Blood The door creaked open fully, and Jaxon stepped inside without waiting for an invitation. He didn’t have to ask—he could already feel it in the air. Something heavy clung to the room like soot after a fire. Fear. Confusion. Guilt.

We needed the intel anyway. “So, how’d everything go?” Nathan asked, casually raising the bet. I tossed in my chips. Tomas folded with a scowl. “Man, it was a fucking shit show. The Riding Hoods rustled up some asanbosam—closest thing to real-life vampires you’ll ever see. Picture a bare-ass monkey with huge claws and bigger teeth. They turned them loose on an entire village. Killed everyone—men, women, kids. Even the pets. Drained fucking dry.”

He stood straight with a serious face as he began his explanation. "Ghosts are the souls of dead humans who... well, aren't ready to rest in peace. They don't have powers. All they can do is move from one place to another without being seen. Well, not by everyone though." "But... if you're a demon, why then are you in this form?" She couldn't help but ask.

After a few minutes, I feel the bed dip and an arm wrap around my body. "I'm sorry you had to see that today doll, people just need to understand they can't try to take you away from me" he whispers near my ear, thinking I was asleep "anyone who tries to get in the middle of this or tries to take you two away from me, well let's just say they won't be seeing another day, goodnight doll" he whispers placing a kiss on my cheek before laying down, his arm remaining around me, I open my eyes staring at the wall.

Cold breeze brought goosebumps on their body. "Helllooo dear frieenndd." A ghost whispered, her presence was felt close to Helen. Her presence brought fear to everyone, it sent shivers to everyone's spines. She appeared in a smoky form, each time, she would deliberately fade away or appear in a human form but in a smoky way, without skin, only Helen could see her human form because she only revealed herself to Helen as a result of her closeness to her. Everybody froze staring at the smoky sight fading and coming together.

"Free hugs limited to one per ghost. Anyone?" After a round of hugging, head-pats, and shoulder squeezes, my arms were sore. I felt oddly embarrassed, like I'd just been sold off to a cat cafe for customer service. "Humans are really warm and squishy! I want one as a pillow!" "So this is what a hug feels like… I'm gonna cry." "I knew humans were fluffy, but Jack and his shiny bald head insisted humans were smooth like him! Liar!" "I'm offering big money to hire a human hugger! One hug a day keeps the doctor away!"

Jake thrust his head back before turning to find a tall hooded figure suddenly standing next to him. He quickly noticed that it was the same person he had seen the previous night outside the Pumpkin Park, with his long dark tattered robes and a hood over his head. "Is this your stall?" "Why? Because I'm standing next to it? You are, too." "What?" "Not important," the figure went on, with his husky voice which reminded Jake of Bill Wilkins' ghost in The Conjuring 2 movie. "This town is filled with things way beyond imagination, kid, most of us are just too blind to see it..."

The coincidence was just too much to be true. He took another look at the name on the ID card; with his imaginative eyes he slowly turned the name Heaven backwards and it appeared as Nevaeh. He has been sleeping with a ghost he concluded. There was no need to call a prophet to reveal it, even the blind will see and understand this. He needs to drive this thought away, make the pain and fear disappear, he needs to get drunk; so he ran away from the morgue and went to a beer parlour.

I came closer to them, their eyes widened and I pulled back and when they both shouted. "Ahh..." They quickly retreated hugging each other's sides. I was even more happy with their expression, so instead of speaking and saying that I'm real and not a ghost, I raised my hand and walked closer. They both screamed and ran. I stopped approaching them and laughing . They screamed even more and were about to run when they hit the wall—it was Hace who looked at them badly. It's still early in the morning ! Lara and Marj also stopped when they saw Hace and we stilled . They were separated from the hug and sister Marj bowed.

The sensation of his touch after days of absence felt like a familiar melody playing in the background of my life. His embrace spoke volumes, conveying a longing that matched mine. In that moment, words seemed insufficient, and actions became the language of our unspoken connection. I hugged him back, feeling the strength in his arms and the sincerity in his embrace. It was a hug that held the weight of missed moments and unspoken conversations.
