The man was coughing now, and the rhyme registered a sweet melody on Eric’s ears, even as he heaved and took in his last breath.
God of the universe, my foot. Eric hissed and walked up towards his father’s corpse. He removed the large ring from the man’s index finger and placed them on his own. Nobody had moved. Everybody still stared as though they were rooted to the spot.
“All hail the emperor,” Someone shouted from behind.
Eric smiled. He recognized that voice. It was the voice of Abigail, the heir to the golden throne of Ekron.
“All hail the Emperor,” Another person, whom Eric did not know, said, and as if that was the signal, the hall turned from sadness to joy.
