The revving of motorcycles caught my attention right as they appeared around the corner. Six riders cut off all our exits. They were dressed in black leather with full helmets. Each of them brandished a wand. Two spells hit Xavier, and he fell to the ground. Exposed, I made a run for it. A jolt of pain seared my back, and I stumbled. My ankle twisted in the high heels, and I went down hard. Gravel bit into my forearms as I broke my fall. A pair of rough hands dragged me upright. The man turned me to face his helmet-covered features.

Madam Amelia seemed to know this as she nodded her head at me. “Now what? You can’t break your vow. What will you do? You can’t have a Wolf Rider running around Astoria.” There it was. She knew what her daughter was. The half human part of it was the least of it. The fact that she was a Rider—a creature that could control a werewolf with a simple command. The rider brought the bike to a stop directly below our vantage point, helmet sleek and dark, visor down. He turned his head up toward the roof like he knew exactly where we were. Even from this distance, even through tinted glass, I recognized them. Those eyes. Pale. Icy. Fixed on me. My breath caught. He lifted one gloved hand to his helmet and flipped the visor up just enough for me to see half his face.

Chris pursed his lips as he asked, “How’s the review of surveillance videos coming along?” “Boss, I cannot steal Web Rider’s thunder, or he will skin me alive.” Night Rider scratched the back of his head. “Right you are...” Web rider walked in flamboyantly as if on cue. His appearance was a contradiction to all the other shadow guards. He had a strip of hair through the midline about 5cms wide and 3cms long that was dyed green, like a parrot’s tuft while the rest of his head was shaved clean. His clothing was just as ridiculous. He wore a bright magenta leather jacket and pants.
