“And maybe now that you have, you’ll stop being such a jerk to me.”
He said it so evenly, so completely deadpan, that I pushed him before I’d finished processing it — a short, reflexive shove that he absorbed without moving much.
“I stopped being a jerk to you a long time ago,” I said. “I’m actually nice to you.”
“Nice,” he repeated, with the specific tone of someone reviewing evidence that doesn’t fully support the conclusion. “You did save my life. I’ll give you that. And carry me through the rain. So — marginally less jerk than before. You’re still in the category though.”
