For a second, panic flickered in Julian's eyes. He took a step forward, mouth opening to say something, but Lily lunged, grabbing my arm. "Elena, let's go!" Because Lily had demanded a tandem jump, we were shackled to the same bungee cord. The moment she leaped, I was yanked off the platform like a dead weight. Gravity vanished. I didn't think about the market. I thought about the girl in the basement who had once told me she wanted to be invisible. I stepped off the ledge. Audrey gave the command: "Ignite the Pillars!" A column of blue-white fire erupted from the Spire, meeting the fragment mid-air. The collision was not a sound, but a "Shattering of the Air." The fragment groaned, its trajectory shifting by a mere two degrees—just enough to send it screaming past the city and into the boiling waters of the Western Trench. The shockwave knocked every citizen to their knees, but the city stood. They had caught the first stone, but thousands more were falling.

The failsafe spoke again, voice still calm, still measured. “Final request. Voluntary compliance.” Melissa squeezed my hand hard enough to hurt. “I am not leaving them,” she said. The failsafe lowered its hand slowly. “Then consequence path is initiated.” The ground dropped. Not collapsed. Dropped. Like gravity had been reassigned. We fell as the street folded inward, reality peeling apart beneath us like layers of paper tearing free from glue. As we plunged into darkness, the last thing I saw was the failsafe standing perfectly still above the collapsing world.
