She bore it for three years. The day I was born, Hera set the Furies outside the birthing room. My mother labored three days and three nights, until the blood had soaked the whole bed red. She cried out Zeus’s name, over and over. He did not come. He was with Hera at a banquet, the ceremony raising her family to new rank. It was Artemis, goddess of the hunt and of maidens, who heard what my mother was suffering and sent one of her nymphs to help. Without her, both my mother and I would have died that night.
