His crimson armor shimmered in the dim light, and the flames of war flickered in his irises. “Finally,” he said, rolling his shoulders, his bloodthirsty smirk sending chills down the spines of the lesser gods in the room. “It’s been too long since I’ve crushed something beneath my feet.” Hades was the last to move. He did so slowly, his dark robes barely making a sound. The room dimmed as his presence expanded, and shadows curled around him like sentient entities. His cold, eerie eyes flickered toward Zeus.

A thick, weathered book lay open before her, its yellowed pages vibrating slightly. She spoke in a low, melodic voice: “Estra me seish kruel. Estes ses seish kruel. Hillma re kuvena celin. Oshrma celin.” The candles flickered wildly, and the air in the room grew colder. ‘That’s black magic!’ Naila’s voice rang sharply in my mind. I stiffened. ‘How do you know that?’ ‘It’s written on the book’s spine. That’s a forbidden spellbook.’

AVA’S POV After the grand walk-in of those men in tailored suits with their leader, Vincenzo, who had me on chokehold, not because of his handsomeness, but because of the aura emitting from him, everything changed. The way he watched Adeline, the way his presence was always there, heavy and intoxicating. It made my pulse race. Yet, I hated the fact that her stalker got eery and eery every freaking page I flipped. Like dude, either step into the light or crawl back into whatever shadow you crawled out of.

As he was laughing behind me, I smiled a sincere one. It was almost midnight and Ed was busy in his phone. We told Anna and the others about our flat tire.
