While balancing the notebook on my lap, I tug the pencil from my pocket and begin drawing. With broad and light strokes, I sketch the frame of the mansion before including windows for the rooms and open balconies. The prince of this castle will want fresh air and a cosy space to admire his beautiful land. The towers at the top are spiralled with gold edges, glistening in the eternal sunshine. The plants and vines blossom with flowers so big the hummingbirds nearly drown in the nectar.

From outside, very faintly, almost nothing at all, came one heavy thud that might have been somebody’s body hitting the wall or somebody’s ego splitting in half. Poppy didn’t even turn her head. She held out her drawing to me proudly. “Look. This is the new castle. This one is for me. This one is for Bunny. This one is for Mommy if you behave.” I looked at the drawing of a giant pink tower with a helipad, a vegetarian dragon, and something that might have been a conference room. “Beautiful,” I said. Heidi had used a bright yellow crayon to draw two massive, perfectly round circles for the eyes. "He’s really, really tall," Heidi explained, pointing her small finger at the yellow circles. "And he wears a big coat with a hood, just like a wizard. He doesn't talk out loud. He talks inside my head like a whisper. And he has eyes like the moon, Mommy.
