Isabella’s POV “Mommy, are we going somewhere?” Mira’s tiny voice broke the silence in the room and snapped my attention away from my phone. She was seven years old, yet her voice still sounded small and silvery, like that of a four-year-old. I never understood why. Sometimes it worried me. Other times, like now, it just made my chest ache.

Your sweet sixteen, becoming an adult at eighteen, being able to drink at twenty-one. But twenty? What was so significant? I felt like I was going crazy from my inability to understand. My confusion only ran deeper as I continued to stare at Jack, watching his entire face run white as his lips pressed into a thin line. It was as if a monster had suddenly appeared behind me, or as though I’d turned into one myself.

The ground where Zephyr had vanished was no longer empty. A faint circle of silver ash had formed — delicate, almost invisible unless you knew where to look. Her breath caught. The ash pulsed once. It must have hurt him, because he was holding onto his stomach and letting out coughs. “I’m sorry.” He kept saying in between laughs. I ignored him and looked towards the door. What was taking her so long to come? I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was only fifteen past seven but I was already bored and grumpy.

CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO🔞 ~DAPHNE~ I suddenly began to feel hot as my heart threatened to pull out of my ribcage. My knees buckled, and I had to hold onto the desk to keep from falling to the floor. "So, I'm just going to write your name down here," she continued smoothly, entirely ignoring my terror. She picked up a dark pen and scribbled on a piece of paper. "And you are twenty years old, am I right?" "Yes, ma'am," I whispered, my whole body shaking violently. "But... but that's not right! I'm not supposed to be dead! I'm just... I'm just twenty! I just had my birthday celebration! I'm not supposed to be dead!"
