We finally got our first-phase breakthrough, and everyone in the lab was over the moon. We were just about to celebrate when the PA system crackled to life. The research director called the core team in to meet a major new investor. I shrugged out of my lab coat and stepped into the conference room. The second his face appeared on the big screen, it was like my heart stopped. Ethan. The man I had once loved more than anyone was now the one I would give anything to forget.

Somewhere in the haze, I felt someone drag me–force me into something narrow. Whitney's voice came faintly, "Just a low-level clerk delivering files. And she dares to threaten me." When I woke up, everything was pitch black. From outside, I could faintly hear the host's voice. "Please welcome our chairman to the stage." They called again. And again. The crowd began to stir. "The chairman has never missed an event like this. Did something happen?" "We saw her last night. Where could she be?" I tried to move.

My soul jumped out of my body and back, surprised by the sudden appearance of a deadly serious face while I was so deep in my thoughts. “W-what the actual hell, Steven?” I automatically said, taking a step back in my room. “You know what. I was going to come and talk with you last night, but when I came to your door, you were not alone. You didn’t tell anybody, did you Alice?” his threatening voice annoyed me, while he invited himself inside and closed the door behind him.

If it was, it had worked spectacularly, because the two had an awkward little hug, something that they never did, and then Luke was gone again. It took Steven a minute to think it through, to wrap his head around it just being said and done. If Steven didn't know any better, he’d think that the universe was fucking with him. Either way, it didn't feel like it could go too much longer. Whatever was going to happen, Steven just wanted that ill feeling to leave him. He wasn't used to it, and he didn't like it at all.

Yet the silence pressed on my chest until I could hardly breathe. A soft knock broke through my thoughts. I groaned. “Not again,” I muttered, already preparing another speech for Thames about how space meant staying away. I opened the door…and froze. “Steven?” He smiled a little, his eyes scanning my face. “You look like you’ve been crying.” I wiped my cheek quickly, forcing a small laugh. “I was about to call you.” He leaned one shoulder against the frame. “Yeah? I figured you might need company.” Something in his calm voice made the tension ease a bit. I stepped aside. “Come in.”

He cleared his throat and said, "Diana, your imagination is so rich." "What do you mean?" Steven put his arm out in front of me at this point, then explained: "Look, my vein is broken. Out of concern for you, I pulled out the infusion tube. Besides, Sharmaine and I aren't what you think they are. I also have my own rules." "Damn it! Why do I have to explain this to you? I really have lost my mind." Steven muttered in an angry voice. I'm still not wholly convinced; I don't intend to hide what I've seen.

I, Riley David, the girl who pulled the strings of a vengeance against the mafia, was stammering like a silly schoolgirl in front of a sports specimen. "Hi... yes, I'm Riley. The... the pleasure is mine," I stammered. I tried to recover my mask of sufficiency, but having this specimen so close was liquefying my brain. "Nice to meet you, Steven. I didn't know the Space Mechanics geniuses came out to sunbathe." Steven let out a low laugh, a warm sound that made the hairs on my arms stand up. "Only when the company is worth it, Riley," he responded, his smile widening as he released my hand with a tortuous slowness.

He probes further, and I give him the same answer. “Yes.” “Then I guess there’s nothing to worry about, but I must warn you if we find out you lied in this meeting about your powers then no one can save you from the fate ahead, Luna Andrea.” I flinched when his eyes changed colors from red to blue, then golden before going back to his original color brown. “Is that a threat, Steven?” Dante asked, but Steven just shrugged. “That’s the end of the meeting.” Elder Steven said, and a growl of disapproval came from Dave and his cohort.

But they’d thought Steven might want to know. Well, he couldn’t care less. At the time, there wasn’t anything he could have done for the boy. And besides, he’d turned out fine. Heath was living in this fancy house. Heath had thousands of fans who adored him and a radio station that thought he walked on water. Heath was the man… Steven punched the numbers and waited… And the panel beeped acceptance and shut itself off. “Man… I’m good… She’s dead and buried, but the bitch is still helpful…”
