He hesitated, his gaze dropping to the floor. “It’s complicated,” he mumbled, his voice barely audible. And though I pressed him, he wouldn’t elaborate. His reasons remained shrouded in mystery, a secret he was unwilling to share. And though I was frustrated, though I was starting to feel suffocated by his secrecy, I found myself respecting his wishes, his need for control. It was a strange dynamic, this power imbalance, this unspoken agreement. But it was ours, and for now, at least, it was enough.
