It was like searching for a needle in a haystack, and with every passing minute, the urgency only grew. But then, as I was about to give up for the night, something caught my eye—a small, weathered book tucked away on the bottom shelf. Its cover was faded, the title barely legible, but there was something about it that drew me in. I carefully pulled it from the shelf, the pages brittle and yellowed with age. The title read, *The Lost Chronicles: A History of the Ancient Magics*. My heart raced as I opened the book, scanning the pages for anything that might be relevant. It wasn’t long before I found a section that made my breath catch in my throat.

Like a VIP. She looked through the shelf, trying to see which book to start with and for some strange reason one particular book kept calling to her. “The Anthropology and History of Witches.” It was boldly written on the spine of the book and was very difficult to ignore. And as she extended her hand to grab the book, she felt unsure and scared. Almost like she was committing sacrilege by simply being curious about those creatures. Her mind raced back to the witch that was burned infront of the mansion grounds.

I didn’t hesitate. I pulled Fifty Shades of Grey first (cliché, yes, but I needed an entry point), then The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty by Anne Rice, Story of O, a slim volume called The New Topping Book just to balance it out, and two anthologies with titles like Bound Hearts and Surrender to Me. The stack felt heavy in my arms, like contraband. I carried them to the my corner and hid them under the table. I sat down, and opened the first book.

A moment later, a piece of paper slid through the narrow gap beneath my door. The footsteps retreated in haste. I peered through the peephole. The hallway was empty. I didn't touch the note, afraid of smudging fingerprints. Instead, I crouched and read the words on it: I know the truth about Edmund's death. Come to the big banyan tree in Greenfield Residences at 11 p.m. Don't call the police. The note was crafted with meticulous care—letters cut out from newspapers and books, pieced together like a ransom demand, leaving no trace of handwriting.

And suddenly I remembered every mystery novel I'd ever read, every movie I'd ever seen, and an idea struck me. Hidden passages. Old mansions always had hidden passages, right? It might have sounded ridiculous, but this might've been my best and only bet. I rushed forward to the nearest shelf and started pulling books off, throwing them onto the floor all willy-nilly, looking for anything unusual. But there was nothing. “Ugh, c'mon. I need a miracle, and I need it now.” I tried another shelf, then another. The books on the floor continued piling up, and the dust from the books almost killed me.

I reached out and delicately retrieved it from the shelf, cradling it in my hands. A surge of anticipation coursed through my veins as I opened the book, its pages pristine and unmarred. The words within held the promise of hidden truths, a key to unlock the enigma that had consumed my thoughts. I read the title embossed in elegant lettering: "Tears of the Moon: Secrets Untold." My heart raced with excitement as I turned to the first page. The words danced before my eyes, weaving a narrative of forbidden knowledge and clandestine affairs. It spoke of a world beyond the ordinary, a realm where ancient forces converged and hidden battles waged under the pale light of the moon.

But no matter how much I hated Axel and how badly I wanted to detach myself from him, as long as the bond remained unbroken, this unbearable ache for him would never disappear. I tried to snoop around the castle in subtle ways. When no one was paying attention, I slipped up the staircase, my heart pounding a little too hard. Unfortunately, the king’s study and bedroom were locked. No surprise there. He was probably hiding a gazillion secrets behind those doors. Instead, I turned my attention to the general library. I replied, shaking his hand briefly before pulling it back, a tingle left in its place. “So, Kalia, what’s so captivating in that book of yours that you almost missed the best coffee in town?” He nodded toward my cup. I tilted my head, considering him. “You are assuming I don’t already know that this place has the best coffee.” He raised an eyebrow. “Fair enough. But now I’m curious about the book.” I held it up, the cover facing him. “It’s a mystery novel. Keeps me on my toes.” He leaned in slightly, intrigued. “A mystery, huh? So, you like solving puzzles?”

The lady at the cashier recognized me immediately when I came in and gave me a small smile before assisting the next customer lining up in front of her. They were told to pretend that they don't know me and I'm glad that mom told them to because I don't want to grab everyone's attention and curiosity. I just want to shop and be out of the house in peace. I hurriedly went to where the fantasy books are. I've been reading mystery books for the past month and I want to try something different. I don't know why, but I'm really engrossed in reading mystery books especially when I could always figure out who the suspect is before the detective could even tell who it was in the end.

I think I need to find him… but if I do, how can I find him when I don’t know what he looks like? Will he come to my rescue? Will he end these mysteries?
