Rivers on the map seemed to flow from the same point. It looked to be outside the boarder of the present-day water kingdom, but I felt myself being called to the place. “Do you think we could check that place out after we finish up the tour of the kingdom?” I asked.

It was now covered in hand-sketched border lines, coded scent markers, and sigils Melody had inked in charcoal to show where the wards were thickest or thinnest. Five markers sat near the bottom edge of the map. One for Silverveil. One for Ash Ridge. One for Frostfang. One for Hallowmere. And one, off to the east, jagged and dark: Ironclaw. Liam’s jaw ticked. “They called council at Hollow Creek,” he said quietly. Melody made a face. “Gross.” Heather leaned over the map, one palm flat on the wood, eyes scanning. “That little bend where the river cuts under the ridge?”

I passed my eyes through the map well and I meditated on it, to be sure on how to locate the conservatory. There were more holes in the walls than walls. But it did have a lot of bushes and sheds scattered around the perimeter. “Hmmm.” She took the mouse from my hand and clicked a couple of times. She had a front view and moved around expertly across the map. “That will work. We need to have a map of the surroundings so we can designate where people will be.”

The moon had barely sunk beneath the horizon when Derek stood at the edge of the forest, the air damp with fog and tension. The witch's map burned softly in his hand, the ink glowing like veins of molten gold as it shifted and twitched, revealing the route through the Darkwood. This wasn’t any ordinary forest.
