The next day, I begin in earnest.
Joren brings the map.
He doesn’t ask why when I request it, only studies my face for a long moment before nodding once. When he returns, he unrolls the parchment in a narrow servant passage where the walls swallow sound.
“This is the inspection route,” he murmurs. “ it has been used before but not often.”
I lean over it, memorising every line, every bend.
“This section,” he says, tapping a stretch where the road curves between dense trees and rising rock. “ this is were visibility drops and horses slow. There is no villages nearby.”
