My breath caught. "I don't know what you mean."
"Don't you?" He leaned against his wagon. "I see it in your eyes, child. That hunger, that desperation. You're wanting something fierce, and it's eating you up inside."
I should have denied it, should have maintained the pleasant mask. But something about his matter-of-fact tone, his lack of judgment, made the words spill out.
"There's someone," I said quietly, making sure no one else was nearby. "Actually, there are four someones. And they're all devoted to someone else."
