How I Built This Book Novels & Stories

I lay in the dark and listened to the city outside the window and felt the particular, terrifying clarity of someone who has just discovered the one thing they are completely unwilling to lose. I started making calls the next morning. I started building. Not loudly. Not visibly. The way rivers build, underneath, wearing channels through stone over years and years until the day the ground finally opens and everyone acts surprised by what was always moving beneath their feet. Charlie slept three floors above me and thought he had broken me. He had no idea he had just made me impossible to stop.

Junior called after him, "is all I was going to say." He read four chapters of the book that night at his small table under his single bulb. It was even better than he had expected, dense with real world strategy models and case studies of businesses that had started from nothing and become something extraordinary. He read with his notebook open beside him, writing as he went, pulling out the ideas that connected with things he had already been thinking about and building on them in ways that the book itself hadn't considered. He was on the fifth chapter when he heard something outside his window.

It was harder than the speeches. That was the thing I had not fully anticipated. The speeches required me to be present for an hour and then it was over and the presence could end. The book required me to sit at a desk in the kitchen in the early mornings before the children woke and return to the material day after day after day, to pick up where I left off, to carry the story open rather than being able to close it at the end of a session. I wrote the second chapter over two weeks. The third chapter took three.

Instead, he watched as I opened the storage room door and ran a finger along the newly sealed frame. “This has to stay airtight,” I told him. “Books are delicate. And the first editions, I want to preserve them.” “I still don’t get why you’re not hiring contractors.” I shrugged, brushing my palm across the smooth wood of the front counter. “Because I enjoy this. And… it’s how I was raised.” His eyes narrowed just a little. “What do you mean?” I paused. “My brother and I used to build forts in the attic. Used to sketch out hideouts and label each drawer. He always said the world was loud, but we could build our own quiet.”

I have no furniture, no friends within six thousand miles, no professional credentials beyond a business degree I graduated with four years ago and then immediately set aside because Liam's world did not require me to use it and I had not yet understood that was a problem. I have, in other words, everything I need and nothing I was relying on. It is the most terrifying and most clarifying combination I have ever experienced. I open a new document. Type one line at the top. "What do I want to build?" I sit with that question for a while. The kettle boils. What the Book Became She wrote it over fourteen months — not the Tuesday practice of the personal record, but a daily practice, morning hours at the study desk before the council work began. The book had a different quality from everything she had written before because it was written from rest rather than from urgency. Not ease — rest. The specific quality of someone who was inside the thing they were describing and had enough distance from the urgency of building it to see its full shape. The book had twelve chapters. She had not planned twelve chapters — she had let the chapters arrive in the order they arrived and counted them when she was finished.

’ ‘Thank you, I built it all myself,’ he hummed and kissed my neck. Almost toppling over, I swerved around to face him, ‘You what?’ Ev crossed his arms and arched a brow, ‘It still surprises me how much I still manage to surprise you, darling.’ ‘How?’ ‘I read a book— hey, don’t roll your eyes at me!’ Giggling, I bit down on my lip, ‘Sorry, it just doesn’t surprise me that a book is what inspired you to build all this.’ I spun around in a circle, still in admiration of it all.

We just finished Part 2 of this huge four part book. It has been a wild ride and if you have stuck with me this far, I congradulate you. It hasn't always been easy. I have taken you all over the place with this, my inspiration has ebbed and flowed and life has gotten in the way at times, but you have made it really far into the story.

Both were really awkward at each other at first but when they found out that both were reading the same book, they eventually got a comfortable to talk at each other. “So, you also read that book-” “Yeah, I got into it after a friend of mine recommended it to me.” “Isn’t it a great book.” “Yeah, I got hooked on it after reading the first chapter.” “bla-bla-bla” Both continued to talked to each other and enjoyed their conversation. “I was feeling an awkward atmosphere growing between our table so I was gonna try to start a conversation but when you brought out your book, I was just surprised to see a person reading it.” The girl said.
