A small Wraith no larger than a butterfly escaped the portal and flung itself at a white-faced Master level Neratomay, who grabbed her face where the Wraith landed. But it was too late. The Wraith was inside her. She collapsed to the floor and began to seize, shaking and trembling with impossible speed before leaping to her feet. But she was no longer a Neratomay. She had become a zombie with cracked skin, long teeth, and claws, her eyes deader than dead. The zombie leaped with unnatural speed at a shape-shifter that had shifted back to a man, tore him in two, and began to eat his torn flesh.

How long have I been unconscious? As suspected, Zombie is the first person I see. He appears with a tray of food and an extra blanket draped over his arm. “How does your head feel?” he asks, acting friendly as he places the tray within my reach. “That was a hard blow you took there.” His hands brush the side of my head, but I push him away. “Don’t touch me,” I say, keeping my voice indifferent. “I understand that you hate me,” Zombie replies, looking directly at me. “Clay had orders to bring you to me unharmed. I never wanted him to hurt you.”

But, they didn't know that it is their cruelty and their fear for something that they did not know is much more monstrous. I moved to the next page, again. With that, the Zombie Man chooses to live a simple life away from other people. Day by day the Zombie Man chooses to pretend to be a human but failed. I was about to move to the next page of the book titled The Zombie Man that I am reading again. But I was immediately taken aback by the arrival of a new guest today. “How are you, Hailey?” Asked by the man who's checking my vitals. He was Dr Charles Perelman, Hailey's father.

After all, the more blood thirsty they were, the less control they had over themselves. She shivered as the rain soaked her clothes, causing them to stick to her skin. She carried on walking, though she couldn't see and her hands and feet were frozen. There was no doubt that she would end up with a cold considering she had to stay out until sunrise. Before she could take another step, she found herself almost flying through the air as her feet barely touched the ground and someone's arms firmly around her. “You wanna get out? Go. No one’s gonna stop you.” As much as I hated to admit it, he was right. We’d seen what they could do. Just like zombies, they would eat anyone they saw. I could still hear the screams echoing in my head and see the bloodstains on the walls. The room fell silent again, everyone exchanging uncertain glances. I felt hopeless.

"Good. Lets just get back to the warehouse. Get behind the walls." The four-kilometer drive felt like it took hours. Every time a stray zombie stumbled out from a side alley my foot jerked on the pedal. The heavy steel plow on the front of the truck pushed them aside like dry branches. The city was still burning around me, black columns of smoke twisting into the gray sky but all I could think about was the cold terrifying look in Justin’s eyes. He was right about one thing—the world was changing fast. If a Tier 2 Awakened was already walking around on day one, my current defenses weren't going to be enough to keep me alive.

[Juliet's POV] The music at the celebration party continued. Surrounded by a crowd, Alison basked in the crowd's repetitive praises. Suddenly, a deafening boom came from the city walls. Overlapping growls and roars of zombies tore through the atmosphere. Terror erupted instantaneously. People in the crowd screamed, "It's a swarm of zombies! A massive swarm of zombies!" A guard ran over, staggering along the way. "The lightning barrier on the right of the base has been breached. There's a massive gap. Zombies are coming through soon!"

Before long, I felt my hands grow so numb that I could barely move them. I was so cold. I knew I had messed up. I would never dare covet my younger brother Beckett Walker's food again—not even a whiff of it. Suddenly, the piercing wail of a red alert echoed through the entire base. It was a Code Red—the highest-level zombie horde invasion! I could hear panicked screams, frantic footsteps, and the deafening roar of heavy gunfire. I summoned every ounce of strength I had left to shout, my voice trembling and stuttering from the cold. "Dad! Mom! Let me out! The zombies are here!"

Because most likely, she would become the first life witness that saw the zombies had started to change at this time. Maya hissed in pain when she saw that her neck, hands, and feet had been bitten by the zombies. Looking at her reflection in the mirror, Maya smiled as she saw herself already looking like a scary zombie because of the injuries she was currently receiving. The blood that came out of from the wounds looked horrifying from the reflection of the glass that surrounded the first floor mall. Maya limped towards the exit. She just wanted to quickly prove her theory before she died now. "Maya!"

The thought of it consumed her. Not to mention, of course, her journal. How could she ignore that, too? After she’d returned from the hospital, the first thing she did was re-read it. She had to know that this was real, that she wasn’t crazy. The more she read it, the more she felt certain. Here she was, holding something real. Holding something that even a scholar like Aiden couldn’t explain away. And of course, it was Aiden, a scholar, an authority figure, who had insisted that this was all true. That Scarlet would turn into a vampire.
