The warmth inside, the earlier breeze, the long day— it all starts catching up. I blink slowly. Once. Twice. “…I’m just resting my eyes,” I murmur faintly, my voice already softer, barely there. I don’t even realize when my head tilts slightly to the side. Or when my breathing evens out. Or when the quiet finally pulls me under completely.

I can hear my heart beating so loud and fast. I took a deep breath before opening my eyes again hoping that something just glitched… [slowly open eyes] “AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!” What is happening to me?!! What the f*ck is this?? I blinked, looking straight at the ceiling but I saw Lilly's face. A beep sounded in my ears, blocking all voices. I darted my gaze on my family's faces. I tried to smile. 'I'll return with him,' I tried to say but I couldn't speak. The beeping increased, making me queasy. I tried to block the voices, and raise my hands to my ears. My body wasn't obeying me. The beep sharpened, I cringed but could not block them.

It’s as if I’m on the phone–something I’m never allowed to use–and I can actually hear Mr. Blake’s voice, and he’s talking directly to me. “Wh-who? Who is talking to me please?” I say aloud as I also think the stuttering mess of a sentence.

I blinked and sometimes forgot where I was looking. And lately—more and more—I’d been hearing my voice in my head. Panicked. Muffled. Screaming. Get out. Move. Run. But my body didn’t respond. I walked into the girls’ bathroom and gripped the edge of the sink. My reflection stared back—calm, composed, flawless. Too flawless. My fingers trembled. “Something’s… wrong,” I whispered. Then— Flash. A gust of wind slammed into the room like a force of nature.

Was this how stillness felt? I blinked once. The light became blurry. I blinked twice to clear my sight and I finally got it back. So I tried to speak. It felt like the hardest task. Barely moving my lips felt impossible. I was just too numb. And when I thought I finally uttered a sound, no words came. My lips didn’t move. And the strangest question came upon my mind. Did I even still have lips? Panic bubbled quietly in my chest— if I even had a chest.

I shake my head to stop the voice as I listen to more things being destroyed. “Miiiiiiiiaaaaa, hahaha do it, take what is ours.” I shake my head as I clutch at the sides of my head. “No, leave me ALONE!” I stand and move to the vanity and brace my hands on either side of the sink, looking in the mirror. My heart beat increases as I watch as my eyes swirl. I gasp and jump back. What the fuck? “You’re in my head, you’re in my head. Leave me alone.” I shout at the mirror as the laughter echoes in my head.
