I hated myself for missing that strength. “That is why I chose you,” I said instead. “That is why I left her.” I pulled her gently toward me. She stiffened, then shrank back, as shy as a startled deer. The reaction made my stomach twist. What had I seen in her that made me burn everything else down? Maybe it really was the pregnancy. “I will always choose you,” I continued. “That is why Soraya is gone.” Suddenly, she shoved me. The force caught me off guard. I stumbled backward, barely avoiding the shattered glass beneath my feet.
