I can't die here, at least not with this strange man. So I had to use my shield ability to hold us up just before the elevator touched the bottom of the building. Our bodies floated as the elevator floor hit hard down there. My heart felt like it was going to explode. My breathing became rapid. I had just survived death. I also saved someone else I hated.

Last time, Lana said the rescue team would take two hours too. From when I got out of the car to when I died—it wasn't even thirty minutes. But the second I stopped moving, they showed up right next to my body. I'd been driving before. Didn't have time to think it through. Now I finally got it. They were following me the second I stepped out of the car. If the fall didn't kill me, they would've finished it—made sure I stopped breathing. My skin crawled. A chill shot straight up my spine.

I will survive. And somewhere deep inside, I knew danger was close

Through survival. Because I wasn’t just still here. I was still standing.

I hadn't prepared for this moment. I wasn't prepared. Since the "safe house" I had been trained to be ready for anything. Kidnapped by the U.S government, I could escape. Left stranded in a desert, I could survive. Abandoned in Antartica, I could live. Strapped to a chair with a bomb, I could save my life. Stranded on an island, I could get back. Not on food or water because i rarely got any of those unless i trekked for a long long time. I survived for you. I survived on the thought of getting back to you but by the time the first year past, the second, the third and almost the fourth—“

“You don’t have to be.” The words settle into me, heavy and unfamiliar, and I realize with a faint, unsettling clarity that this isn’t a one-day thing, that the aftermath of holding the world together doesn’t resolve neatly just because the crisis is over. About the specific quality of a year that had contained more than most years contained. The registry hall and the hospital and the contract and fourteen months inside a life I had not planned that had become the most honest version of a life I had ever lived.
