Be ready at 8. I leaned back against the steps, the warm breeze on my face, and let myself feel something I hadn’t felt in years. Hope. Not the desperate, clinging hope of someone trying to hold onto something that was already gone. But the quiet, steady hope of someone who had finally stopped running. I didn’t know what the future held. I didn’t know if I’d ever see Ava again. I didn’t know if I deserved to be happy. But I knew I was going to try.

Instead, my heart pounded heavily as something flashed through. I hope I was wrong.
