Intertwined
I pull out slowly, careful not to break the spell, and shift my weight, rolling us onto our sides so we’re face to face.
Her eyes are closed, lashes dark against her flushed cheeks. She looks wrecked in the best possible way, sated and soft. But as her breathing evens out, I notice the subtle shift. Her brow furrows slightly, her lips press into a thin line, and a single tear escapes the corner of her eye, tracing a glistening path toward her hairline.
My thumb moves automatically, wiping it away before it can disappear into her hair. It’s not a tear of joy. I’ve seen those. This one is heavy, weighted with something dark that has no place in our bed.
