How was I supposed to say the words that decided my fate? "Be good, Yara. I'm talking to Mia's parents right now. Just text me the results." Click. A sharp pain knifed through my chest. I froze, then redialed. I had no one else. I needed him. Needed his voice, his warmth—something to hold onto before the fear swallowed me whole. This time, he sighed, already annoyed. "Can you not? Mia's just a friend. What's so wrong about me helping her? I already promised to marry you—what more do you want?"

A low, familiar growl rumbled close to my ear, steady and grounding. Then — nothing.

he said biting his fingers, acting like he was actually considering something. "Oh I'm sorry, no vacant positions. You can be my personal assistant if you want, I'm sorry but that's the only vacant position. Or you can be my mistress you know, then you'll be assured I'd take absolutely good care of you" he said with confidence and with a scorning smirk.

The probability that I'd be in the same room with him regularly was moderate but not high. The blank didn't affect the work. The blank was notable, professionally — an anomaly, a question about the limits of my capacity — but it wasn't a problem. I wrote it up in my personal notes. Not in the work notes — this wasn't a case observation. Personal notes, in the section for things that were mine to sit with. Entry was brief: the blank is consistent. Not performance, not defense. I let out a giggle and spent the rest of the afternoon wishing the day away at the office. I got home around 6pm, I pour myself a glass of wine to calm my nerves and start to get ready for my date with Blake, I'm so nervous my hands are shaking trying to do my eye-liner, suddenly my phone let's out a beep, it's a text from Blake! "Wear red, it will look great on you".
