The nurse had flame ginger hair, glasses enlarging her eyes like milk bottles, and a crooked smile. She was also shapely, stout and spoke with a lisp. It was wrong to prey on what I’m sure was a traumatic high school experience, but these were desperate times.
“Please,” I begged, “She’ll be the subject of gossip and shaming for months if this gets out.”
She put down her magazine and sandwich and gave me a lasting stare before hauling herself to her feet and waddling into the back. A few moments later, she returned with a box wrapped in tissue, covering the label.
