Jazz POV Growing up without parents to guide and nurture me, I was deprived of the opportunity to witness the true essence of companionship and friendship that mates are meant to embody. Tragically, my parents passed away when I was just a child, leaving me to navigate the complexities of life on my own. To make matters worse, the family I resided with in the absence of my parents were hardly present in my life, except for the moments when they subjected me to emotional and physical abuse over trivial matters. This tumultuous upbringing has shaped my perspective on relationships, leaving me yearning for the genuine connection and support that mates are meant to provide.

I asked, breaking the silence. Kaia made another face at Saige before looking at me, “Mates is short for soulmates. Our parents always talk about being each other soulmates and since Saige obviously still can’t put together a proper sentence, she says mates. Basically, for the game, we’re parents and they’re parents” she explained. Well that makes sense. “Oh! Okay! Then we’re mates then!” I said happily. Kaia laughed and rolled her eyes, “Only in this game. We can’t possibly be mates in real life” she said before walking to a nearby bench to put her book down. These kids are funny. I don’t know what they are but they seem like great people.

Us being mates is a joke made by the moon goddess. I pushed myself off the wall. I have decided. I hated him. Every inch of my body felt rage when I remember all those times he tricked, pranked, and even lied to me. How will I ever know that he is telling the truth? If this is one of his schemes. I ask, hoping that what I am thinking is not valid. "There is no way to fake a mate bond." He says while giving me a sad face. There is no way he can be my mate Luca and Levi are my mates. "Then it must be something else. I have Luca and Levi. They are my only mates." I tell him. "I hope that is the case. But, until we know for sure, let me help you keep him from knowing all your thoughts, and then we can work on finding out why he can mindlink you at all." I shake my head yes as he takes my hands.

So I grab my keys and go to our garage for my black mustang and drive him before the packhouse so that everyone can get seated. I drive to the town which is still in pack territory, so we don't have to worry about humans and their skeptical eyes about our food orders and their portions. Everyone orders steaks with fries and soda to drink. We start a little chit-chat, Meredith and Alex are mates and they are trying to have a pup and Nate is starting 10th grade, so he is a sophomore. He is very intelligent, almost a nerd and we like to make fun of him because of that. Fortunately, he is alright with that, because he doesn't have to learn anything, he just sits in his classes, makes some notes

"When are you going to cut the attitude and admit the fact that we're mates cause I know too damn well that you felt the mate bond like I did?" She was angry. Well fine! I was angrier. The word 'mate' just seemed to tick me off. I didn't want to hear it cause I knew I could never have her. You can't eat your cake and have it. That was the problem here. My life posed a danger to her and I'd rather keep her distant and save her life than claim her as mine and risk her life in the process.

But now, his silence was terrifying. Because the same word rang inside my head again, echoing through me like thunder. "Mate." No. No, no, no. This couldn't be happening. I couldn't be mated to two of them. I felt my wolf shrink back, retreating deep inside me—trying to hide from the pain that was already coming. The rejection. It would come soon. "What a fucking joke." Alex's voice sliced through the silence. He let out a bitter laugh before hurling his glass across the hall. It shattered, silencing the music, the whispers, everything.
