“But what, Jesse?”
He shook his head fast, like he wanted to take it back. “I was leaving. I was already walking away.”
“And?”
“And I made a mistake.”
My voice dropped. “What mistake?”
He swallowed hard.
“I turned,” he admitted. “I turned back and I saw his face.”
“What about his face?”
Jesse’s voice grew rougher. “He had tears in his eyes, Mira.”
My heart did a painful, stupid little twist.
And I hated it.
