“I’m not going to hurt you.” Peering into his eyes told her a few things. His pupils were unusually large and he seemed a little confused. Jacob had obviously drugged him pretty strongly but she had no idea what he’d used. The powerful guy sprawled on the floor probably couldn’t move. He’d have fought otherwise when Jacob had assaulted him. He lay meekly next to her but his eyes were lively and another growl tore from his slightly parted lips. She tried not to shiver from the sight of his sharp fangs.

The projected Transmigration Bureau agents charge and scatter the Ravens attacking close to the ground. Kera either slashes them apart with her overgrown talons or bites them in half with her fangs. Ankou throws a barrage of acidic blood-balls just like a rapid pitching machine. And Yama Ranger, on his creepy steed Nightmare, blasts away with his two six-shooters, a lever-action carbine in his third hand and his portal-opening lasso in his fourth.

These were predators who had planned every single step. I did not sleep well. Morning came anyway. Zane knocked at six forty with coffee and the blue dress and a look that dared me to argue. I took both without a word. I was saving my energy. I was going to need it. The executive floor of the Fury stadium was quiet at eight in the morning. Glass walls, thick carpet, the kind of air conditioning that cost a fortune to maintain. I had delivered paperwork to this floor exactly once, in my foam suit with the left ear drooping, while a coordinator stared past me like I was furniture.

He shifted into his human form and I averted my eyes, refusing to stare at his naked body. "Who are you?" he asked angrily. It was clear that he was a rogue. My lips trembled and the baby began crying. "My name is Freya Allan...and I have nowhere to go." He narrowed his eyes at me. "Freya Allan, you should listen to me because I'm warning you, if I see another human being in my pack, I'll kill them," he said harshly. I closed my eyes and opened them again. "I'm not a human and besides I'm a rogue just like you" I whispered softly and stretched out my hand showing him my powers.

My eyes burn with tears I refuse to let fall. “No!” I scream. “GET OFF ME!” And then—he’s gone. One second he’s pinning me to the tree, the next he’s ripped away like a ragdoll, thrown hard against the forest floor. He lets out a strangled grunt as he crashes into the dirt, and before I can even breathe, another figure barrels into him. It's Daniel. Fury radiates off him in waves. His eyes are glowing, golden and wild, and his growl is so deep it vibrates through my bones. He’s on the rogue in a flash, fists slamming into the bastard over and over.

Phoenix’ POV Ranger and Ryder arrived only seconds after Antonellia’s muppets, sorry, puppets, came around the corner and onto the beach. They are as grotesque as they are stupid, with beer bellies, scraggly hair, and gnarly teeth. These fuckers have been on our radar for months, and from what we have seen so far, I’m surprised they survived infancy. So much for the theory of natural selection.

Then he noticed new snakes forming, mostly from bloody parts. “Damn it! They're regenerating!” he yelled out in alarm. Fury looked behind and saw the shocker. He growled in anger, the sound rocking Lutz's body. The snakes behind were getting closer and would lunge at their backsides soon. But this was where Fury's powers came in handy. His eyes blazed red and a sandstorm erupted between them and the army of snakes. It whirled them up, a storm of impenetrable dust and took them far off.

I shouted, pulling Dren with one hand and signaling Warren and Mara with the other. The clearing erupted behind us as another bolt sliced through the dark, hitting a tree so close the bark exploded outward in a shower of dust. The ranger was still firing — hidden, precise, unpredictable. His presence threw the Silent Mark into disarray, but it also meant the forest was no longer simply dangerous. It was unknowable.

My fury propels me down the stairs, around the building, and into my truck. I reverse sharply out of the parking spot, maneuver through the lot, and merge into the traffic with a determination that burns hotter than my wound. By the time I reach the council chambers, twenty wasted minutes have already fed my temper while I searched for a place to park. I slam the gear into park, snatch my bag, and storm toward the entrance. The heavy door nearly rips off its hinges when I yank it open, and I shove past the security checkpoint. Guards rush toward me, but whether it is the fury radiating from me or the sight of my blood dripping steadily, I cannot say. One feral growl from me unleashes my aura
