There was no rest for the wicked, and she must be the most wicked person. As she gathered what she needed, Becky turned on the radio to listen to the morning news. Of course, it wasn’t good. Another person went missing in the state park, and the authorities didn’t have a clue what happened to them. That made it five people in the last six months. Three of them were in the last month. Becky thought she left statistics like that behind in Boston.

Jack tried to lighten the mood. Bing looked up. “Maybe I can put you in charge of that without messing up.” “Not if Albert and his buddies eat all those beans.” The door to the conference room the FBI occupied banged open and the agents spilled out, just as he said the last word. They headed out the front door, Agent Hunter in the lead. “Any news?” Jack hurried from the captain’s office and called after them before Bing had a chance to call him back. “Missing-person case up in New Jersey. Two, actually. Female, twenty-one and twenty-three. One kidnapped three days ago from her home, the other one this morning,” the last of the junior agents said before the door swung shut behind him.

I honestly don’t want to know the gory details. “There have been more girls that have gone missing in the last week.” Mike told us. “Fuck, from where?” Jayson asked. “Several locations. There were a few from your college but again they weren’t taken from campus. They are girls that no one will miss. Several have been orphans that have aged out of their orphanages so no family to report them missing. Their friends have been the ones to report them missing. There have also been a few guys that have disappeared as well.” Raul states.

I interrupted him, he needed to get to the point, I didn’t need a long winded backstory, there was too much at stake. “That’s just it, over the last month there has been an increase in missing persons but from what I’ve been told they haven’t got her yet,” He sounded as confused as I felt with that last statement. “What do you mean they haven’t got her yet?” I turned to face him, my voice a little higher than I’d hoped for but there was an unsettling feeling that had started to grow inside of me. “How can they promise something they don’t have?”

"That was at 5 AM. You haven't slept. And you look like you're about to tell me something that's going to change everything." Dimitri took the coffee cup, sat down heavily. "It's worse than we thought," he said quietly. Mike remained standing. Dimitri pulled out the tablet Marco had given him that morning, turned it so Mike could see. Started scrolling through the data. Missing persons statistics. The spike across five states. The age demographics....predominantly poor, marginalized, forgettable people. The government's non-response. Mike's expression darkened with each screen. "They're kidnapping people," Mike said.

“There was no identification on you when you were brought in. You were listed as a Jane Doe. We filed a missing persons alert, but no one came forward. I’m sorry.” “No one?” My voice cracks. “No one,” he confirms softly. “Do you remember anything? Any phone numbers? Family members?” I nod slowly, tears welling up. “My husband. Jake. My sister... Amina.” He pats my hand. “We’ll try to help you get in touch. For now, rest.” He leaves, but I can’t rest. Not with my heart pounding in my chest like a war drum. Not with the sickening realization that no one had come looking for me.

I could hear plates being broken as I walked out. A grown-ass man throwing a tantrum. I got into the car and relaxed my head a little. The day's events were emotionally draining and I don't think I'll survive another. "I think you should see this, Boss," Stanley announced from the front seat of the car. "What's that?" He passed his iPad to me. I collected it and the next thing I saw was Annika on the screen, it was a police record profile of a missing person. She had been reported missing by two people just on the same day.

"Is everyone seeing this now?" I looked up, tear-streaked but resolute, as I faced the cameras. "This is the daughter he claimed never existed. This is the child he sent to human traffickers!" Cameras flashed widely. Chester was finished.

“Who are you talking to? That cousin again, or someone I don’t know?” I had just finished confirming my flight. I locked the screen. “I was reading the news.” His face darkened even more. He snatched the phone from my hand and demanded the passcode. “Our anniversary,” I said. Nine years together. Six simple digits. He entered them once. Then again. Then a third time. The phone stayed locked in his hand. By the time we returned to Blackthorn House, neither of us had spoken another word. The car had barely stopped before he helped Lyra upstairs, one arm wrapped around her waist as if she might break.

We went to the police station to file a missing person case but was told to come back after two days, because a person is only declared missing after two days. Paul insisted we go back but i refused. Frustrated, he left me alone. But i didn't give up. I went to the company to search for him but was coldly turned back by the receptionist. As i took my leave, i heard the staffs sneering behind me that i was nothing but a liability to Jason, now he's missing, I'm pretending like i care.
