Outside her window, the courthouse steps were visible, but no one inside this room cared about spectacle. She opened the gray file slowly. The movement was deliberate. Inside were copies of old reports. A missing persons case from six years ago. Unresolved. Dismissed as voluntary disappearance. At the time, it had been easy to accept that narrative. The victim had debts. He had enemies. He had reasons to vanish. Or so it had seemed. “Elio Carbone,” she said quietly while sliding one photograph across the desk. I looked down at it.
