I snapped, sounding as pathetic as I felt. "Can I get you something?" Mom asked. "Do you want us to do something?" maybe something for you to eat? Or that we call someone to keep him company? I shook my head. - I'm not hungry. And now I want to be alone for a while. This is how my life would be from now on, so I might as well go getting used to it. As I dragged myself out of the room, barely able to lift my feet, I heard Theresa say quietly:

Without a word I snatched it from their hands, tore the petals apart, and dropped them onto the floor in silence. I really need to stop reacting. I guess my hormones are already haywire. This isn’t me. They didn’t know what to say, standing there, watching me with a mix of surprise and hurt as if they hadn’t expected this reaction. Huh. Me neither. “I just need to be alone for a while,” I said flatly, my voice empty. They mumbled something, some excuse, but I didn’t hear it. My heart was pounding, my mind focused on one thought… leaving. I can’t stand them anymore.

Once broken, it can’t be mended with tears alone. And I’m starting to get tired of being the one who always makes room… for someone who hasn’t let go of the past. *** I left without saying much to anyone. I just left a short message for Rachel, saying that I need some time. I’m not running away cause I just need to breathe. I left a sticky note on the refrigerator for Matt, telling him that we need space. If you still want to talk later, I’m not going anywhere. But right now, I need to be alone.

“I want to be alone. Get away from me.” My voice cracked, breaking into an ugly sob. “I want to be alone… please… leave me alone… leave me… alone.”

Each person eats alone, lives alone… as if we are strangers under one roof. So please, act like me, or they will notice. I am a quiet person. I do not like getting close to my family. I spend most of my time alone… without friends, without real connections just me and my silence. It may sound sad, but it is easier than trying to belong to something that does not give you a place. Take care of yourself.

Ember's POV I looked at him steadily. "Leave me alone," I said. Ethan blinked. "That is the one thing," I said. "Not a complicated task. Not something that requires resources or planning or any particular skill. Just — leave me alone." I held his gaze. "No calls. No texts. No showing up outside my dormitory. No delivering notes through junior students. No appearing in hallways and cafeterias and corridors and demanding conversations I have not agreed to have." I paused. "Leave me alone. Completely and permanently. That is what I want."
