It was the same smirk her father used when he was closing a deal. Kael sighed. He slowly peeled off his sweat-soaked t-shirt. Aurora’s breath hitched. His torso was a map of scars. Old knife wounds from his training in Siberia, burn marks from the battle on the ship... and now, the fresh, angry red burn on his ribs. She reached out. Her fingers were cool against his hot skin. She traced the edge of the wound. "You took this for me," she whispered. "I'd do it again," Kael said, his voice rough. He wasn't looking at her hands. He was looking at her lips.

The damage pulled his skin taut, making that side of his face look almost skeletal. From the side of his temple down to his jawline, she squinted, staring closely. Another fine ridge of a scar ran there, this one was drawn with a blade tip. It traced so close to his eye that the lashes on that side were forever shortened, yet his eyes burned with a wicked sort of amusement as he watched Akira check him out. It was a normal routine for him; anytime anyone saw him, they stared for a long time, trying to figure out how he had gotten all of his scars. There was just something about his untidiness that didn’t sit well with Akira.

He glanced at my stomach. “Does it hurt?” “No.” “Don’t lie. Last time, holding it made you collapse.” “It’s nothing,” I said, hiding the truth. That scar was a permanent reminder even with the blood tie broken, Beta Kyle’s mark lingered. Kael’s crimson eyes narrowed. “Scars fade. Think of it as a survivor’s wound.” “A survivor’s wound?” I echoed, surprised. “It hurt. It left its mark. But look at you alive, standing, stronger than you know. You survived.”

This gives me an excuse to remove my shirt in a way that may make him feel more comfortable. With a hesitant nod, Kai watches me intently as I slowly lift my shirt over my head, revealing my muscular chest. He can’t keep his eyes off of me, though as soon as his eyes land on the scars on my chest, including the newest ones from the recent battle, he bites his lower lip seductively. “You’re…” “I’m?” I ask with a playful smile dancing over my lips. The way he tries to look away but can’t keep his eyes off me is driving me insane. I take his hand and hold it against my chest, allowing his fingers to dance over the scars.

The serum makes it so we’ll forever bear the scars of our marks to show the world that we belong to one another. I trail my fingers up his neck, his jaw. To his eyebrow, which also bears a new scar. She always wanted to ask him about them without hurting his feelings. But she always stopped herself because she didn't know what would be his reaction. She didn't want to upset him. But now the curiosity was killing her inside.

I answer, grabbing a glass from the counter and fill it with cold water. “Hey look at me, I got these scars because my pack attacked me, I nearly beat a kid to death,” Hanzo admits, I look at his side then up into his eyes with a furrowed brow. “How old were you and what did he do?” I ask looking down at my shirt and shiver a little when I see a couple droplets of blood. “About your age, we like the same woman and things went too far, we got into a fight and I couldn’t stop,” Hanzo explains with a sad look, making me want to hug and comfort him.

But for now, I was going to enjoy this chaotic euphoric feeling flooding through me. I let him wash my hair, my head leaning into his hands as he takes care of me. When his hands skim across my chest, his eyes glow a spectacular ruinous black. His jaw tensing as his body starts to shake violently. I look down, his fingers lathering against three wounds…three scars. I hadn’t even noticed. Even with my wolf now, these won’t ever heal, these are like birth marks and I’m okay with that. But it seems to create a chemical reaction within him.
