He gave her another of his easy, disarming smiles, then straightened up.
“Victor, I’ll be in touch.”
“You do that, Kevin,” Victor’s voice came from the door of his office, gruff but not unfriendly.
Kevin gave her one last look, a gaze that felt too long, too significant for a simple farewell. Then he turned and walked back toward the elevators.
The doors hissed open, he stepped inside, and they closed, carrying his unsettling presence away.
She sat motionless for a moment, her fingers hovering over the keyboard. Her pulse was still racing, but the frantic energy of moments before had morphed into something colder, sharper.
